The Banyan Tree was first planted in Lahaina by Reverend William Owen Smith, an American missionary who came to the islands in 1831 along with fellow missionaries from England. The group chose Lahaina as their new home due to its abundance of fresh water and ideal climate for their mission work. Reverend Smith’s son, William Richards Smith, brought two six-inch seedlings from India with him when he arrived on Maui and planted them near his father’s church. One of these seedlings eventually grew into what is now known as “the Banyan Tree of Lahaina”.
