The History of Launiupoko
Launiupoko has been around since the mid-1800s when it was first settled by Hawaiian royalty. The Hawaiian territorial government gave the area to King Kamehameha V in 1859 as part of his private estate. In 1895, after King Kamehameha V died, the land was inherited by his sister Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop who later sold it off to developers in 1917.
Launiupoko was officially established as a residential neighborhood in 1925 and has since grown into one of the most popular areas on Maui. It’s a great place to find peace and tranquility while still being close enough to downtown Lahaina for easy access to shops and restaurants.
Launiupoko was once home to ancient Hawaiian settlements known as ahupua‘a—land divisions extending from the ocean up to the mountains. This area was essential for providing food and resources for its inhabitants; they grew taro, fished in Lahaina harbor, and used nearby streams for irrigation. The last chief of this ahupua‘a was Pa’ia Chief Hoapili who lived here until his death in 1866.
The ahupua’a was also an important political center during King Kamehameha I’s reign over Hawaii. The king built a heiau (temple) here to honor his beloved queen Kaahumanu in 1829 and held important meetings at Honokahua Heiau near Lahaina Harbor. In addition to this historic temple, there were several other sites of religious significance located throughout Launiupoko including burial grounds, shrines, and pathways called alaloa that served as conduits between different lands.
Today’s Launiupoko State Wayside Park
In 1973, King Kamehameha I’s temple site was preserved as part of Lauinpoko State Wayside Park which now covers more than 200 acres along the coastline of Maui’s western shoreline. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as picnicking under shady trees or swimming in secluded pools located near the beach. There are also many historical sites throughout the park that commemorate Hawaiian culture such as a replica hale (house) built with traditional materials like koa wood and ti leaves. The park is also home to Haleakala National Park which offers stunning views of Haleakala crater—the highest peak on Maui—as well as numerous hiking trails that lead visitors through tropical rainforests filled with native plants like ohia lehua trees and fragrant flowers such as pikake or jasmine blossoms.
