A Brief History of Ewa Beach
The area now known as Ewa Beach was once home to a Hawaiian fishing village called Ku’ilioloa. In the mid-1800s, sugarcane plantations moved into the area and began harvesting sugar cane from the land. The plantation owners built homes for their workers and organized them into neighborhoods based on ethnicity—Japanese workers were assigned to one neighborhood while Filipino workers were sent to another. This system of segregation increased racial tensions throughout the area until it was abolished in 1948.
Nowadays, Ewa Beach is made up of a diverse population including Native Hawaiians, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, Caucasians, African Americans, and Hispanics. This unique blend of cultures creates an incredibly dynamic community that continues to grow every day.
Local Government
Ewa Beach is part of Honolulu County which is governed by a Mayor/Council form of government. There are two City Council members who represent Ewa Beach at City Hall—Heather Kimball (District 4) and Tommy Waters (District 5). The current mayor is Kirk Caldwell who has been in office since 2013. He is responsible for overseeing all city departments including public works, police, planning & permitting services, parks & recreation department, fire department, transportation services etc., as well as developing policies that will benefit residents in the long run.
Schools
Schools are an important part of any community and Ewa Beach is no exception! The area is served by six public schools—Ewa Elementary School (K-5), Iroquois Point Elementary School (K-5), Ilima Intermediate School (6-8), Campbell High School (9-12), Leihoku Elementary School (K-5) and Holomua Elementary School (K-6)—and one private school—St Damien Catholic School (K-8). All these schools have excellent academics programs coupled with extracurricular activities such as sports teams or afterschool clubs that give students plenty of opportunities to learn outside the classroom environment too!
