History Of Hawaii Kai

Hawaii Kai is a residential neighborhood on the eastern shore of Oahu that has been around since the early 1900s. Over the years, it has experienced both natural and man-made growth, and today it is one of the most popular neighborhoods in all of Honolulu.

Hawaii Kai traces its roots back to 1819, when Kamehameha II granted permission for several families to establish farms in Waialua Valley near present-day Hawaii Kai. The area became known as Waialua, and by 1887 there were enough residents living there that a petition was drafted to create a town called Hanauma Bay. The town was approved and Waialua soon became home to many businesses – including a sugar mill, two churches, and a post office – that served the new community.

In 1914, Hanauma Bay was renamed Hawaii Kai after Queen Liliuokalani’s favorite bay in Hawai’i. At this time, only about 100 homes had been built in Hawaii Kai; however, by 1931 the population had grown to 2200 people. The 1920s were a prosperous time for Hawaii Kai as businesses such as shipyards and canneries opened up and residential development increased rapidly. This growth led to problems with sewage disposal – an issue that wasn’t resolved until 1956 – and congestion on roads leading into the neighborhood.

During World War II, Hawaii Kai’s marina saw heavy use from military vessels sailing between Pearl Harbor and various parts of Asia. After the war ended, civilian boats again took over most of the marina’s business; however, jet skiing emerged as one of Hawai’i Kai’s most popular waterfront activities during this time period.

As recently as 1970, only about 10% of Oahu was developed; however, since then much more land has been developed – including much of what now makes up Hawai’i Kai – resulting in increased traffic congestion problems on local streets. To address these issues, planners have worked hard over recent years to develop plans for redevelopment that will allow for more compact development while still maintaining access to waterfront activities.

How The Ancient Campsites Became A Residential Community

Hawaii Kai is a community located on Oahu that was first settled by ancient Polynesian settlers. Over the years, this area has become home to many diverse people from all over the world. Today, Hawaii Kai remains a multicultural community with a rich history.

The settlement of Hawaii Kai began with the arrival of Captain James Cook and his crew in 1778. At the time, this area was known as Waialae-a-Lānae (the place of many waters). Over time, more people began to settle in Hawaii Kai thanks to its natural advantages as well as its close proximity to other growing communities on Oahu such as Waipio Valley and Waianae Valley. This diverse population helped to create the multicultural environment that exists today in Hawaii Kai.

The development of residential communities in Hawaii Kai largely took place between 1920 and 1960, when developers built homes near the original campgrounds along Kalanianaole Highway (now known as Kamehameha Highway). These developments included single-family homes, townhouses, apartments, villas, golf courses, churches, schools, grocery stores… etc., all situated within easy walking distance of one another.

Today, Honolulu County estimates that there are now over 940 residents living in Hawaii Kai proper; while there are an additional 1,000 residents living within a 5-minute drive or ride from our community via public transportation or carpooling!
